Nintendo Wii still sells like warm bread from the oven and it'll still be fun in 2009. Why is it still so difficult to find in some places?
That is just it - some places - it's not quite as difficult anymore to buy the Wii as it once was. In the UK for example, the store Argos have the console in stock just about 100% of the time now, but of course it's not like that everywhere.
Wii's main competitor, the Sony PS3, is still getting slaughtered in terms of sales. Wii Mario Kart and Wii Fit both sold incredibly well on release and continue to do so, with the Wii Fit selling out the whole of the stock sent to the US by Nintendo in the very first few days. Wii supplies in the UK are particularly short at Christmas due to the rush of parents who promised their kids one only to discover that they can't find one anywhere. Buy it summertime instead.
This console sells so well possibly because the Wii Sports in particular is a good way to lose weight and remains just as much fun now as it did when it was first released, if not more. There is another factor which makes this console unique and attractive for non-gamers - getting fit. Wii Fit's Balance Board works kind of like two scales fused together, which, as its designers found, makes it instantly more fun than just one. And boy, can you work out on it.
The audience is expanding even more as Wii sales are nearly double that of the PS3's. My guess is that Nintendo did not anticipate how quickly their latest console would be adopted by people outside of it's normal market. I think it is selling so well not just because of the "hard to get" principal, but also because it has opened up a much larger market for video games. We're witnessing a substantial change in the videogame marketplace with the Wii, one that even Nintendo couldn't predict and it remains a unique system that appeals to many non traditional gamers.
Maybe a Wii2 is on the way. Who knows eh?

Anytime you go out to buy a video game system, it always helps to see if you can find a bargain in one way or another. The Nintendo Wii Fit features four main categories of exercises to choose from: Strength Training, Aerobics, Yoga and Balance Games. Taking the revolutionary motion sensing abilities of the Wii, the Wii Fit itself features the inclusion of the Balance Board, a sturdy device placed on a flat surface, that can read the motions and gestures of anybody standing on top of it.
This nifty device features more than 40 different exercises across four areas of training such as leaning to block soccer balls, swivelling hips to power hoop twirls or balancing to hold the perfect yoga pose. These are of course fun activities, and don't forget the ski jumping and heading soccer balls, that challenge the player's overall body balance.
This is all about controlled motion using arms, legs and other body parts which in themselves include dancing, exercise, balance and dexterity games which Nintendo says will help to build muscles and provide stability.
The Wii Fit Balance Board will allow your Mum to do yoga, your Dad to do push-ups, and you to play that nifty head-the-soccer-balls-but-not-the-panda-heads mini-game that comes packaged with it. There are a slew of graphs tied in with a calendar to ensure that you stick to the programme and woe betide you if you miss a session because you'll get a good old fashioned nagging if you stay away from your Wii Fit for too long.
This system, with motion-sensing controllers and play is intended for a broad audience beyond hard-core gamers and I don't have to tell you that it's working just fine all around the world.
Fitness is about cardio-vascular, agility and stamina. Fitness and entertainment at the same time. Is it possible that the Wii Fit and the Balance Board can provide a stimulating workout? You bet it is.

There was once a time when all young children would have a farm set of one type or another. Some were elaborate sets with buildings and barns, fences and countryside furniture, others were simply a big box of wooden or plastic animals, with the box becoming the farm house and the patterns on the carpet representing the fields and paths. Although farm sets and the animals that go with them are still widely available today, how relevant are they for today's child, when you consider in particular the fact that very few children have even seen a farm, let alone expressed any interest in leaving the city when they grow up and becoming a farmer?
Whilst many children, perhaps the majority these days, have no personal experience of farms or farming, it is unlikely that they will escape the concept since farms and the animals within feature frequently in stories and tales that they will be familiar with. Even many nursery rhymes cover the concepts, such as 'Old Macdonald' and 'Little Boy Blue'. The fairy tales such as Jack And The Beanstalk feature farms and farmers at the centre and children may be familiar with seeing them from a distance as they race by on long journeys.
But why do these farms still hold an interest for young children? Perhaps we should be asking this differently, and rather than wondering whether children are interested them, instead we should question why we should encourage such an interest.
Today, farming is big news, and rarely do we find a paper or a television bulletin not raising an issue that concerns farming. Whether it is to do with organic products, animal welfare or illnesses, genetically modified products or just simply crop cost and availability, we cannot ignore the fact that farms are a very important part of our society. Additionally, it is important that we all realise where our food comes from, and take an interest in this for our own sake, and that of the animals, the workers and the environment.
It is valuable for children to have an understanding from an early age of where their food comes from. Children are fascinated to see cows in a field and know that their milk comes from them, and to see chickens strutting about and know that they are the animals that lay the eggs. It is important for children to appreciate that the food we buy in the shops is not simply manufactured from nowhere, or in big factories, but that it all starts in those fields, with real animals that we need to care about and think of.
An early understanding and appreciation of this can only help to strengthen the long term understanding and support we need to foster as a society to ensure the long term welfare of us all.
Of course, an understanding of the way farms work also provides a chance to begin to understand the life cycle, and seeing new born lambs skipping about gives you an ideal way of introducing the idea of birth and parenting from a different point of view. Children love the idea of seeing animals and babies younger than themselves of course!
