EverQuest was the reigning champion of MMORPGs through the early 2000's. It was a giant that couldn't be taken down. Fast forward to the year 2008 and the game has slowed down a lot. It has slowed down so much, in fact, that many people feel that EverQuest is a dead game. Is EverQuest really a dead game?
When you compare EverQuest's out of game activity (things such as forums) to games like World of Warcraft, you quickly see a difference. The activity on the World of Warcraft boards is close to insanity. New posts are lucky to stay on the first page for a few minutes. EverQuest's forums, on the other hand, are quite calm. You'll see the same posts on the front page for days sometimes. This certainly lends itself to saying that EverQuest is quite dead.
In game activity may not please you any better. Most of EverQuest's zones are completely empty. Being alone in a zone is quite common. The lower levels are almost completely void of people and it makes finding a group a problem. These factors lead to the game feeling pretty dead at times.
All is not lost though! EverQuest still has a lot of areas that are bristling with players. Many zones are empty, simply because there are so many zones in the game. Even with many people playing, having over 500 zones makes it very hard to fill them all with players. Players tend to flock towards the zones with the best experience or loot. So while some zones are empty, others are packed. Players also tend to focus on the newer content. If you want to meet up with other players, it's best to stick to the newest zones.
Although EverQuest has lost players, it's definitely not dead. Finding groups is generally quite easy, once you reach about level 60. Thanks to new gear and potions, soloing your way to level 60 is possible, if not easy, for all classes. So if you're looking to get back into the game, fear not, there are still plenty of players around to have an adventure with.
